Plan Description

The Art of Japanese Dress

What is kimono?

Kimono are the traditional attire worn in Japan. Usually made from silk, these garments are T-shaped robes with long sleeves and feature a beautiful, intricate sash called “obi” that is wrapped around the waist to hold the outfit together.

In the past, Japanese people wore kimono daily, but in modern day Japan kimono are worn for special occasions or big, life-changing events, such as weddings, graduations, etc. Nowadays, kimono still plays an important role for formal occasions in Japan.

There are different types of kimono worn by men and women. For men, they are called hakama. Women wear two types of kimono: Furisode, which is a colorful kimono with longer sleeves, and Homongi, which is usually more subdued in style and color.

There is a distinction between the kimono worn by women who are married and those who are not. Furisode is a formal kimono for unmarried women. It has sleeves that are one meter long.Tomesode is a mainly black kimono for married women, and is considered the most formal kimono.

What is the Difference Between Kimono and Yukata?

A casual kimono is usually called “yukata” in Japanese, which is quite different from the more traditional kimono.

Firstly, the material is different. Casual kimono are basically made from cotton, but traditional kimono are made from silk. The quality of a traditional kimono is much better than yukata, so the prices are also much higher.

Secondly, casual kimono are usually worn on a daily basis, and cannot be worn for formal occasions. In the past, Japanese people treated them like they were pajamas and usually wore them at home around the house and while they slept. Kimono, on the other hand, are usually treated as formalwear. When people attend important life events or meetings, they prefer to wear kimono rather than suits because kimono represent the traditional beauty of Japan.
